wolf hour drizzle
black swans float between
sleep and non-sleep
July 2019
somber newscast
wintering chrysanthemums
in bedding mulch
old calendar—
what lies beyond
thirty-one?
first ice
if Frost is right
then fire
looks like a withering wind
without the deep cold
dark sky
viewing
the world
our oyster
I gulp
small holes
and an awful
emptiness
in the silence
words no longer
conceal
not seeking
any approval
day lilies
honeysuckle
before it appears
. . . and death
noonday heat—
only a butterfly
brings relief
lover's blood
the mosquito smudge
on her palms
in a river
skinny-dippers
while they can
wind scent—
I am bound upon
the unknown
raining onto children
at play
a napalm sky
the short night—
Buson's challenge over
all too soon
grass sprouts
where seed was sown
chicken and egg
blooming there
unlike any other
mountain rose
two by two
returning geese honk
fidelity
dead low water
birth smell, death smell
from beach wrack
the distance
between snowfalls
between breaths
heat shimmer
the garden of eden's
afterimage
forest floor
signs of frost appear
for the seeking
